Chemicals Pesticide
Pesticides are toxic chemicals used to kill or control pests (including insects, weeds and diseases) in agriculture, urban areas and for public health purposes. Their widespread introduction into the environment, often without adequate safeguards, create problems, such as:
Human poisonings and health risks
Environmental hazards
Loss of biodiversity
Wildlife deaths
Animal and livestock deaths
Interference with natural pest control |
Resistance among pests
Unwanted imports
Obsolete and unusable stocks
Residues in food
Water pollution
High input costs |
Conventional farmers can use as many as 450 registered pesticides, as well as fertilisers.
In order to be registered organic, a farmer is allowed to use only 7 natural pesticides on a restricted basis. |
